An Agitated Nutsche Filter Dryer (ANFD) is a versatile piece of equipment used primarily in the pharmaceutical, chemical, and food industries for solid-liquid separation, washing, and drying processes. It combines filtration, washing, and drying operations in a single vessel, making it highly efficient and suitable for processes where product containment, cleanliness, and minimizing exposure to the atmosphere are important.
Filtration: The slurry containing solid particles suspended in a liquid is fed into the ANFD vessel. The vessel contains a filter medium, typically a porous plate or a filter cloth, which allows the liquid to pass through while retaining the solid particles.
Agitation: Agitation mechanisms such as paddles or blades are used to agitate the slurry. This helps in breaking up the cake formed on the filter medium, enhancing filtration efficiency, and promoting uniform drying.
Washing: After filtration, washing of the solid cake may be required to remove impurities or residual mother liquor. The ANFD allows for washing the cake while it’s still in the vessel, minimizing the need for transferring the product to another piece of equipment.
Drying: Once filtration and washing are complete, the drying process begins. Heating elements or jackets surrounding the vessel provide heat to evaporate the liquid remaining in the solid cake. Agitation helps in exposing more surface area of the cake to the heated vessel, accelerating the drying process.
Discharge: After drying, the dried solid product is discharged from the vessel. Some ANFD models come equipped with discharge mechanisms such as a bottom valve or a scraper system to facilitate easy removal of the dried product.
